A useful starting point

What does a coffee-to-water ratio mean?

A ratio of 1:15 means one gram of coffee for every 15 ml of water. A smaller second number makes a stronger, fuller cup; a larger number makes a lighter cup. Treat these recipes as reliable starting points, then adjust your grind, water temperature, and ratio to suit your taste.

One cup in this calculator equals 240 ml. Tablespoon measurements are approximate—using a scale will give you the most consistent result.

Pour Over

Start around 1:16 for a clean, balanced cup. A medium-fine grind and a slow, even pour help keep extraction even.

French Press

1:15 is a rich, dependable starting point. Use a coarse grind and steep for about four minutes.

Drip Coffee

For most automatic brewers, 1:16 offers a balanced everyday cup; 1:18 is lighter and 1:15 is bolder.

AeroPress

1:13 creates a full-bodied cup. Fine-tune your brew time and grind as you dial it in.

Cold Brew

These ratios are for ready-to-drink cold brew. For a concentrate to dilute later, use a separate, much stronger recipe.
