Farmgate prices: what farmers are paid
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) tracks what farmers receive for green (unroasted) coffee beans. In the first quarter of 2025, farmgate prices hit record highs: Arabica ₱290.97/kg, Robusta ₱265.75/kg (up 133.7% year on year, the highest quarterly Robusta price since 2015) and Liberica ₱183.33/kg (SunStar, citing PSA). For comparison, 2024 annual averages were ₱211.28/kg for Arabica and ₱133.15/kg for Robusta (Inquirer, citing PSA). The latest monthly figures are on PSA OpenSTAT.
Globally, the International Coffee Organization’s composite price averaged 248.90 US cents per pound in June 2026, down 2.8% from May (ICO market report).
Why is roasted coffee so much dearer than green beans? Beans lose roughly 15–20% of their weight in roasting, and the retail price also covers sorting, roasting, packaging, delivery and the seller’s margin.
Why coffee bean prices differ
- Species: Robusta and Liberica generally cost less than Arabica, which grows at higher altitude with lower yields.
- Grade and traceability: named-farm specialty lots cost two to five times more than commercial coffee.
- Bag size: 200–250 g bags cost 25–50% more per kilo than 1 kg bags.
- Blends: adding Robusta lowers the price of an Arabica blend.
- Freshness: roasters who roast to order or daily charge for freshness; check the roast date.
Cost per cup
At 18 g of coffee per cup, the bean cost is:
| Price per kg | Bean cost per cup (18 g) | Cups per kg |
|---|---|---|
| ₱773 (wholesale Robusta) | ₱13.91 | about 55 |
| ₱813 (1 kg Robusta) | ₱14.63 | |
| ₱1,068 (1 kg Arabica) | ₱19.22 | |
| ₱1,800 (single-origin Arabica) | ₱32.40 | |
| ₱3,400 (specialty lot) | ₱61.20 |

How to buy coffee beans at a good price
- Buy the size you’ll finish in about a month: 1 kg bags are cheaper per kilo, but beans taste best within a few weeks of roasting.
- Compare per kilo, not per bag.
- Check the species and origin on the label, especially for “barako”, which should be Liberica.
- Look for a roast date or a roaster that roasts daily.
