Last updated: November 4, 2026

Quick answer: Simbang Gabi 2026 runs for nine days, with dawn Masses from Wednesday, December 16 to Thursday, December 24, 2026. Many parishes also hold anticipated evening Masses from Tuesday, December 15 to Wednesday, December 23. In 2025, major churches started their dawn Masses between 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., while sunrise in Manila during the 2026 novena falls between 6:13 a.m. and 6:17 a.m. Check your own parish for this year’s times, as most publish them in December.

Simbang Gabi is one of the few times of year when a lot of Filipinos are awake, dressed and outside before 4 a.m. for nine days in a row. That makes it a coffee question as much as a calendar question. This guide gives the 2026 dates, the start times churches used last year, the sunrise times you are up against, and a simple plan for coffee and the bibingka stall afterward. We are a coffee roaster, not a parish office, so treat the Mass times here as last year’s reference and confirm this year’s with your church.

What is Simbang Gabi?

Simbang Gabi, Filipino for “night worship,” is a novena of nine Masses held before Christmas. The Varsitarian, the University of Santo Tomas student newspaper, describes the Masses as votive Masses offered in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and celebrated from December 16 to 24. Citing a 1999 study by the late UST archivist Fr. Fidel Villarroel, O.P., it says the dawn Masses are properly called Misas de Aguinaldo, from the Spanish word for a Christmas gift. Villarroel read the name as the faithful offering nine Masses to God as a gift for the birth of Jesus.

The same article separates this from the Misa de Gallo, the “Mass of the Rooster,” which in Spain is the midnight Mass of Christmas Eve. Villarroel wrote that the term is “wrongly used by many Filipinos” for the dawn novena. In everyday use, Simbang Gabi covers both the dawn Masses from December 16 to 24 and the anticipated evening Masses from December 15 to 23.

The tradition has formal church approval. According to The Varsitarian, the First Plenary Council of the Philippines asked the Vatican in 1953 to let the practice continue, and the Holy See granted an indult, a special permission. A five-year extension followed in 1961, and the practice has continued since. Wikipedia’s article traces the dawn schedule to 1669 and to farmers who had to be in the fields by sunrise, though that date is marked there as needing a citation, so we treat it as tradition rather than settled history.

When is Simbang Gabi 2026?

Because Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, the novena starts on a Wednesday. The table below lists each day with its date, the evening of its anticipated Mass and Manila’s sunrise time from Time.now. Two days stand out. Day 5 is Sunday, December 20, the fourth Sunday of Advent; Wikipedia notes that the Simbang Gabi votive Mass, with the Gloria and white vestments, is not used when the day is a Sunday of Advent, so expect the regular Sunday liturgy. Day 9 is December 24, which Proclamation No. 1006 declares an additional special (non-working) day.

What time do Simbang Gabi Masses start?

Parishes usually post their schedules in early to mid-December, so 2026 times were not yet out when we wrote this. The best guide is what the same churches did last year. On December 15, 2025, GMA News published Simbang Gabi schedules for 19 major churches in Metro Manila and the provinces. The earliest dawn Mass at each church started between 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., and the anticipated Masses on the evening before started between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Simbang Gabi 2025 schedules as published by GMA News on December 15, 2025 (two articles: Metro Manila churches and major churches around the Philippines). 2026 schedules may differ.

Counting only each church’s first dawn Mass, seven started at 4:00 a.m., seven at 4:30 a.m., one at 4:40 a.m., three at 5:00 a.m. and one at 5:30 a.m. The chart compares those start times with the sky over Manila on the first morning of the 2026 novena.

Chart of 2025 Simbang Gabi dawn Mass start times at 19 major Philippine churches compared with Manila sky times on December 16, 2026. 4:00 a.m.: 7 churches (Baclaran, Quiapo, Binondo, Antipolo, Jaro, Palo, San Salvador del Mundo Davao Oriental). 4:30 a.m.: 7 churches (Manila Cathedral, Cubao, Bamboo Organ, Imus, Barasoain, Manaoag, Jolo). 4:40 a.m.: 1 (Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral). 5:00 a.m.: 3 (Sto. Domingo, CCP, Baguio). 5:30 a.m.: 1 (EDSA Shrine). Astronomical twilight begins 4:56 a.m., civil twilight 5:49 a.m., sunrise 6:13 a.m.
Most dawn Masses start in full darkness. Mass times: GMA News, December 15, 2025. Sky times for Manila on December 16, 2026: Time.now.

Through the novena, sunrise in Manila moves only four minutes, from 6:13 a.m. on December 16 to 6:17 a.m. on December 24, and astronomical twilight, the first faint light, begins between 4:56 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. So a 4:00 a.m. Mass starts about an hour before the sky shows any light, and people at a 4:30 a.m. Mass usually walk out around dawn. The December solstice falls on Tuesday, December 22, in the middle of the novena.

How should you time your coffee around Simbang Gabi?

A dawn Mass shifts your whole morning, and coffee is usually part of that. Here is what the sources we read say about caffeine, without going beyond them.

  • The European Food Information Council, summarizing EFSA’s 2015 opinion, says single doses of up to 200 mg of caffeine and up to 400 mg over a day raise no safety concerns for healthy adults other than pregnant women, for whom the figure is 200 mg a day.
  • The same summary lists a 200 ml cup of filter coffee at about 90 mg and a 60 ml espresso at about 80 mg. The National Coffee Association, citing USDA data, gives brewed coffee 12 to 16 mg per ounce.
  • EUFIC notes that caffeine can affect sleep at doses of around 100 mg in some people, especially close to bedtime.
  • In a 2013 home study by Drake and colleagues at Henry Ford Hospital, 400 mg of caffeine taken at bedtime, 3 hours before or 6 hours before all disturbed sleep compared with a placebo. The authors supported avoiding substantial caffeine for at least 6 hours before bed.

Put together, a cup before a dawn Mass sits well within EFSA’s single-dose figure for most adults. The anticipated Mass is the one to think about. If you go to an 8:00 p.m. Mass and then have coffee with bibingka afterward, that cup lands within a few hours of bedtime for most people, which is the window the Drake study flagged. A small cup or a half dose is the easy fix. None of this is medical advice; if you have a health condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor.

Why do people eat bibingka and puto bumbong after Simbang Gabi?

In a December 23, 2025 report, GMA News spoke with a vendor who has sold the rice cakes for 20 years. Her line was that when people leave the church after Simbang Gabi, bibingka and puto bumbong are what they look for. UST sociologist Villareal told GMA the cakes predate the Spanish period, since the ingredients came from an agricultural people, and that they became tied to the dawn Masses because farmers needed something quick to eat between Mass and fieldwork. He also linked the purple of puto bumbong to the color of Advent.

Both are glutinous rice cakes, and glutinous rice is easy to price. The Department of Agriculture’s Bantay Presyo report for October 26 to November 1, 2026 put the average retail price in Metro Manila markets at ₱73.21 per kilo for local glutinous rice and ₱61.46 for imported. If you are planning a bigger holiday spread, our Noche Buena coffee pairings covers the rest of the table.

How much does coffee for all nine Simbang Gabi mornings cost?

If you brew at home before or after Mass, nine mornings is nine cups per person. The table uses 10 g of coffee per cup, which sits inside the National Coffee Association’s drip guideline of 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water (last updated December 5, 2024). Prices are Caffeine Brothers’ 200 g bags and drip bags on November 4, 2026.

A box of 10 drip bags happens to match the novena: one for each dawn Mass and one for Christmas morning. Drip bags need only hot water, which helps if you leave the house at 3:30 a.m. or want to bring a cup to the office after Mass. If you are hosting a group breakfast after the last Mass, our guide to how much coffee for a party scales the numbers up. For Batangas beans, see our kapeng barako guide.

A simple nine-day coffee plan for Simbang Gabi

  1. Get your parish schedule early. Most churches post times in December; note whether you will go to the dawn or the anticipated Mass, since the coffee timing is different.
  2. Grind or portion the night before. Weigh 10 g per person into a cup or jar, or set out drip bags, so the 3 a.m. routine is just boiling water.
  3. Brew with a ratio you trust. The NCA’s drip guideline is 1 to 2 tablespoons per 6 ounces of water; 10 g in about 160 ml to 180 ml is a good middle.
  4. Use a flask for the walk. Fill an insulated flask so coffee is ready after Mass, when the bibingka stalls open.
  5. Keep evening coffee small. If you attend the anticipated Mass, follow the 6-hour guideline from the Drake study for any large cup.
  6. Plan December 24 separately. It is a special non-working day and Christmas Eve, so many families go to the last dawn Mass and then stay up for Noche Buena; space your cups across the day.

Frequently asked questions

When does Simbang Gabi 2026 start and end?

The dawn Masses run for nine days, from Wednesday, December 16 to Thursday, December 24, 2026. Anticipated evening Masses usually run one day earlier, from Tuesday, December 15 to Wednesday, December 23. Your parish sets the exact times.

Is Misa de Gallo the same as Simbang Gabi?

Not strictly. Historian Fr. Fidel Villarroel, O.P., wrote that the nine dawn Masses are properly called Misas de Aguinaldo, while the Misa de Gallo is the midnight Mass of Christmas Eve. Many Filipinos use Misa de Gallo for the dawn Masses anyway, and Simbang Gabi is the everyday name for the whole novena.

What time does Simbang Gabi usually start?

In GMA News’ list of 19 major churches for 2025, the first dawn Mass started between 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., with 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. the most common times. Anticipated Masses on the evening before started between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Is December 24, 2026 a holiday?

Yes. Proclamation No. 1006 declares Thursday, December 24, 2026 an additional special (non-working) day, and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25 is a regular holiday.

Is it fine to drink coffee before a 4 a.m. Mass?

For most healthy adults, a cup or two fits within EFSA’s guidance of up to 200 mg of caffeine at one time and 400 mg a day; EUFIC lists a 200 ml filter coffee at about 90 mg. If you attend the evening Mass instead, a sleep study found that 400 mg of caffeine taken even 6 hours before bed disturbed sleep, so keep late coffee small.
