How to read the coffee type comparison

Every coffee in this coffee type comparison is scored on the same six traits, so you can see at a glance where two coffees differ. None of these traits is “better” than another. They describe what lands in your cup, and the right mix depends on how you drink coffee.

Boldness

How strong and intense the coffee tastes. Bold coffees hold their flavor through milk, ice and sugar. Lighter coffees taste best black, where their details aren’t covered up.

Body

The weight and texture of the coffee in your mouth. A full-bodied coffee feels thick and syrupy; a lighter one feels closer to tea. Robusta and Liberica naturally have more body than Arabica, and darker roasts add to it.

Acidity

The bright, lively, slightly tangy quality you notice on the sides of your tongue. In coffee it’s a good thing in moderation: it’s what makes a cup taste fresh rather than flat. Medium-roast Arabica has the most; dark-roast Robusta and Barako have very little.

Bitterness

A pleasant bitter edge is part of coffee, and it grows with darker roasts and with Robusta beans. If you find coffee too bitter, compare the lower-scoring options or brew with a slightly coarser grind.

Sweetness

The natural caramel, chocolate or brown-sugar sweetness a coffee shows without added sugar. Balanced blends usually score well here because no single trait overpowers the sweetness.

Caffeine

Robusta beans typically contain roughly twice as much caffeine as Arabica (see the botanical profile of Coffea canephora), which is why Robusta tops this scale. Liberica usually sits closer to Arabica. Blends fall in between depending on how much Robusta they contain.

Arabica grows at higher elevations, which is why our Arabica comes from the mountains of Benguet. It’s the coffee for people who drink their cup black and want to taste its aroma. Robusta is hardier and grows at lower altitudes; it brings body, crema and a strong caffeine kick. Liberica is the rarest of the three worldwide, but it’s a Filipino classic: Batangas Kapeng Barako is famous for its strong, smoky, almost woody cup.

Where the blends fit

Blends exist to balance the strengths of single coffees. CB’s Finest Signature Blend combines Batangas and Benguet coffee in medium and dark roasts, so it’s our all-rounder for everyday cups and milk drinks. The Arabica-Robusta Blend pairs Arabica’s aroma with Robusta’s body and crema, which makes it a strong choice for espresso machines and lattes.

Coffee type comparison FAQs

Which Caffeine Brothers coffee is the strongest?

For flavor intensity, Kapeng Barako and Robusta are our boldest coffees. For caffeine, Robusta is the highest, as Robusta beans typically carry about twice the caffeine of Arabica.

Which coffee is least bitter?

Our medium-roast Benguet Arabica is the least bitter of the five. It leans floral and bright, with a smooth, mildly nutty finish.

Is Kapeng Barako the same as Liberica?

Yes. Kapeng Barako is the traditional Filipino name for Liberica coffee, especially the Liberica grown in Batangas. Our Kapeng Barako is 100% Batangas Liberica, dark roasted.

Can I try a coffee before buying a full bag?

Yes. You can request a free sample, or order a box of coffee drip bags in an assorted pack to taste several coffees at home.

Which coffee should a café use?

Most cafés pick one coffee for espresso drinks and one for brewed or iced coffee. The Arabica-Robusta Blend and CB’s Finest are popular house espresso choices; Robusta keeps costs down for iced drinks. See our wholesale prices for 10 kg boxes.
