Coffee-to-Water Ratio Chart: Measurements for 1, 2, 4, and 8 Cups

A coffee-to-water ratio is a recipe stated by weight: grams of coffee compared with grams of water. Because 1 milliliter of water weighs about 1 gram for everyday brewing, the tables below use milliliters and grams interchangeably for water.

Serving definition: one cup in this guide means 250 mL of brew water, not a coffee-maker “cup.” The water is an input measurement, so the beverage in your cup will weigh less after grounds retain some water.

Calculation: coffee dose = water weight ÷ ratio. For example, 500 mL ÷ 16 = 31.25 g; the chart rounds to 31.3 g. A scale that reads to 0.1 g is useful for the smallest recipes.

Where to start

The Specialty Coffee Association’s home-brewer requirements begin testing at 55 g of coffee per liter of water, approximately 1:18. This is a standardized test starting point, not a rule that every coffee or brewer must taste best at that ratio.

For a practical home recipe, begin at 1:16. If the brewed coffee tastes thin to you, keep water fixed and use the 1:15 dose next time. If it tastes too concentrated, try 1:18. Change one variable at a time so you know what improved the cup.

These are starting recipes, not results from a controlled comparison. Grind, water, roast, and equipment affect extraction. The same ratio can taste different when one of those changes.

Use the ratio with a coffee-maker scale

Many coffee makers label a “cup” as 125 mL. If your machine uses that convention, four machine cups equal 500 mL, or two 250 mL servings in this guide. Read the brewer’s water markings, then use the calculation rather than assuming its cup number matches a mug.

When the cup needs adjustment

  • Too strong or too weak: change the coffee dose while keeping water constant.
