Arabica Coffee in the Philippines: Taste, Caffeine, Where It’s Grown and Price (2026 Guide)

Arabica (Coffea arabica) is the coffee species prized for its smoother, more aromatic cup, with brighter acidity and less bitterness than Robusta. In the Philippines it is grown in the highlands, mainly in Mindanao (SOCCSKSARGEN, Davao, Bukidnon) and the Cordillera (Benguet and nearby provinces), and makes up about a quarter of the country’s coffee harvest.

What is Arabica coffee?

Arabica is one of the two coffee species that supply almost all the world’s coffee; the other is Robusta (Coffea canephora). Globally, Arabica is the larger of the two: the US Department of Agriculture forecasts world production for 2026/27 at about 105.9 million 60-kg bags of Arabica and 83.8 million bags of Robusta, so Arabica is roughly 56% of the world’s coffee.

Arabica grows best at higher, cooler elevations. The slower growth there gives the beans more time to develop sugars and aromatics, which is why Arabica is usually described as sweeter and more complex than Robusta. It is also more delicate: Arabica plants are more vulnerable to heat, pests and diseases such as coffee leaf rust, which makes them harder and more expensive to grow.

Where Arabica is grown in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Robusta is the main crop and Arabica is second. In the Department of Agriculture’s 2020 figures, Arabica accounted for about 14,660 tonnes of dried coffee cherries out of roughly 60,640 tonnes nationally, about 24% of the harvest. Robusta made up about 69%.

Most Philippine Arabica actually comes from Mindanao, not the Cordillera:

Region (DA, 2020) Arabica, tonnes of dried cherries Well-known growing areas
SOCCSKSARGEN about 8,910 Mt. Matutum, Sultan Kudarat
Davao Region about 2,320 Mt. Apo
Cordillera (CAR) about 690 Benguet (Atok), Sagada, Kalinga

Bukidnon (Northern Mindanao), home of Mt. Kitanglad, is another well-known source of single-origin Arabica. The Philippine Coffee Board lists Arabica elevations of about 1,000–1,800 metres above sea level in the Cordillera and 500–1,000 metres in the Visayas.

Our own Arabica comes from Benguet, in the cool Cordillera highlands.

What does Arabica taste like?

Compared with Robusta, Arabica is smoother, more aromatic and less bitter, with more noticeable acidity (a bright, lively taste rather than sourness). The Philippine Coffee Board notes that Philippine Arabicas “can produce floral and caramel notes”. Depending on the farm, processing and roast, you may also taste chocolate, nuts, citrus or berries.

  • Light to medium roasts keep more of Arabica’s floral and fruity character and acidity. Our Arabica is medium roasted: floral aroma, bright acidity, bittersweet and fuller flavour, with a smooth, mildly nutty finish.
  • Dark roasts bring more body, bitterness and roasty chocolate notes, and less acidity.

How much caffeine is in Arabica?

Arabica has noticeably less caffeine than Robusta. A 2026 scientific review of Liberica coffee reported these typical caffeine levels in green coffee beans (dry weight):

Coffee Caffeine (g per 100 g, dry)
Arabica about 1.19
Liberica (barako) about 0.94–1.24
Robusta about 2.14

So Arabica has roughly half the caffeine of Robusta. If you want a gentler cup, choose Arabica; if you want more kick, choose Robusta or a blend of the two.

Arabica vs Robusta vs Barako

How to brew Arabica

Arabica’s aroma and acidity shine in filter methods. Start with these recipes and adjust to taste:

  • Pour-over (V60 or similar): 15 g medium-fine coffee to 250 ml water at about 92–96°C; total brew time around 3 minutes.
  • Drip or brewed coffee: about 1 tablespoon (7–8 g) of medium-ground coffee per 180 ml cup.
  • French press: 15 g coarse-ground coffee per 250 ml hot water; steep 4 minutes, then press.
  • Espresso: Arabica makes a sweeter, less bitter shot with thinner crema than Robusta; many cafés blend in some Robusta for body.

Drink it black first to taste the coffee itself. Use our coffee-to-water ratio chart to scale up.

How to choose good Arabica beans

  1. Check it’s 100% Arabica. “Arabica blend” can mean mostly Robusta. If it’s a blend, look for the proportions.
  2. Look for the origin. A named region or farm (Benguet, Mt. Apo, Mt. Matutum, Bukidnon) is a good sign.
  3. Check the roast date. Fresher is better; see how long coffee beans stay fresh.
  4. Match the roast to how you drink it. Medium roast for black coffee and pour-over; darker roasts if you add milk.
  5. Buy whole beans if you can grind at home, or ask for the right grind for your brewer.
Common misconception What’s actually true
Arabica is always better than Robusta. Arabica is usually smoother and more aromatic, but a well-grown, fresh Robusta can beat a stale or poorly processed Arabica, and Robusta is often better in milk drinks.
Arabica is stronger. It has about half the caffeine of Robusta. A dark roast tastes stronger but doesn’t add caffeine.
Philippine Arabica mostly comes from Benguet. Benguet Arabica is famous, but most Philippine Arabica by volume is grown in Mindanao.
