Participants were given questionnaires for them filled-out which contains detailed health and lifestyle information such as daily coffee consumption, exercise, and other habits, received physical exams and even blood tests.

Researchers found out that those who consumed at least one cup a day had a 6% lower risk of death from the said diseases as compared to those people who drank 8 or more cups a day. Coffee drinkers were about 14% less likely to die than abstainers in a decade of follow-up. Most of them died because of cancer or heart disease. These results were similar for people who drank instant or ground coffee, regardless if it’s caffeinated or decaffeinated. Other factors that were given importance in this study are the following: age, race, smoking and alcohol consumption, sex, body mass index, and other health behavioral factors.
In 2019, researchers at the University of Southampton in the U.K found out that people who drink three or four cups of coffee a day could significantly reduce their chances of early death.
According to Erikka Loftfield, a researcher at the US National Cancer Institute, coffee contains more than 1,000 chemical compounds which include antioxidants. This helps in protecting cells from damage. On the other hand, other studies have concluded that substances present in coffee may reduce inflammation and therefore improve how the body uses insulin. Having said so, this can reduce the chances of developing diabetes.
There are also smaller studies conducted on this and they found out that caffeine can also cause a short-term increase in blood pressure, and it might be linked with high blood pressure in relation to the person’s genetic variation that causes them to metabolize caffeine slowly.
However, the research didn’t include the type of coffee the British participants drank, whether it’s coffee black, with or without cream and even sugar. But according to Alice Lichtenstein, a Tufts University nutrition expert who was not involved in the research but said that the results support previous researches and add an additional reassurance for those coffee drinkers, drinking coffee with extra fat and calories isn’t healthy.
